Experience what it is like to transform a piece of steel into a functional knife, thowing axe, or war hammer.

With hands-on guidance from a renowned blacksmith artist, you will hand forge metal using traditional or modern methods of forging and heat treating. The focus will be on basic blacksmithing skills with an additional focus on hammer control techniques, fine grinding, single bevel and burn tang handle design.

If you are looking to begin a new hobby or you have always wanted to try the art of blacksmithing, this is one of the best opportunities to get your hands a little dirty and forge your own beautiful work of art!

  • Hawkesbury: A massive industrial heritage shop boasting centuries old tooling including coal fire forges, a working line shaft, and a heritage approach to blacksmithing.  VIEW MAP


Course descriptions:

  • Knife forging: Learn the basics of knife forging. Create a 9" knife to completion from raw bar stock.
  • Throwing Axe or War Hammer: Forge your own of 2lbs throwing axe or 2lbs war hammer. The class focuses on basic techniques, upsetting, drifting, tapering, splitting (Warhammer only) and sharpening.

What’s included:

  • Discover the ancient and noble skill of blacksmithing.
  • Learn in a relaxed and fun environment with veteran blacksmithers.

When:   Available year-round with select dates each month for each class (subject to availability). 

Duration: Each class is 7-hours 

Need to know:

  • Maximum number of participants per class is 6.
  • The minimum age to participate is 14 years.
  • Participants under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Participants under 18 require a waiver signed by their legal guardian.
  • Steel toe shoes or boots are mandatory.
  • Full length cotton or wool pants and a long sleeve cotton or wool shirt are mandatory.
  • Rings, bracelets or necklaces cannot be worn during the class. Exception is for a medic alert item.
  • Students are to provide their own water and snacks. At least 1 litre of water is recommended.
  • Gloves, aprons and safety glasses will be provided.
